District Nurses

The District Nurses, now based at Burghfield Health Centre, work closely with your doctor visiting people of all ages in their homes. They are responsible for identifying and assessing the total nursing needs of patients and for planning, initiating and providing appropriate care. They also assess the needs of carers who are nursing people in the community, teaching and supporting them in their task.
The District Nurse has knowledge of local and national services available to patients and their families and has a role in Health Education in the community.
The District Nursing team can be contacted through your doctor, by leaving a message at Reception or by leaving a message on the answerphone. They are available to speak to you personally between 9.00a.m. and 9.30a.m. on weekdays and will be happy to take referrals or deal with problems directly. They are also able to refer on to other agencies, if appropriate.
Preconceptual Care
The Doctors and Health Visitors can provide advice and counselling to couples planning their pregnancy.

For midwifery advice TEL: 01635 273386 between 9 am & 1 pm. Outside these hours please leave a message on the answerphone.
The midwife can help you with all aspects of care during your pregnancy and in the first 28 days following your baby's delivery. She holds antenatal clinics at the surgery and antenatal classes at Burghfield Health Centre. Should the midwife not be available urgent advice can be obtained 24 hours a day from the Labour Ward of the respective hospitals.

Health Visitors

The Health Visiting Team is based in Burghfield. They are qualified nurses specialising in community health.
Their primary role is maternal and child health, expanding to cover the general health and well being of the community at large. Some of the services they provide are listed below:
Post natal classes
Maternal and child health - they will visit you in your own home once you and your baby have been discharged by the midwife. They will continue to see you during your child’s primary years. During this period they can offer support and advice on all aspects of child care. This includes: behaviour, feeding, minor ailments, post natal depression, parenting skills and child development.
Baby Clinics - they hold regular health clinics . Here you can weigh your baby/child, seek advice or share concerns and meet other parents. Clinics are held as follows:
- Tuesday 1.30 pm - 2.30 pm Mortimer Methodist Hall
- Thursday 1.30 pm - 3 pm Burghfield and area Childrens Centre
Community services
They can offer support and advice on the following;
- environmental issues
- bereavement counselling, including following miscarriage
- benefits advice
- education and health promotion e.g. stopping smoking, diet, accident prevention
- referrals to other health professionals
