SPECIALISED CLINICS
The following clinics run throughout the week. Please telephone 01189 332436 to make the appropriate appointment. |
The health check clinics are run to promote better health for all our
patients. They will provide a general health screening service
looking particularly at risk factors for heart disease and strokes, with
specific assessment and advice on healthy eating, exercise and
stopping smoking.
| |
The asthma clinic aims to provide the best symptom control and
education for our asthmatic patients by offering a yearly check-up
for all asthmatics on regular medication.
Diabetic patients registered at Mortimer are encouraged to attend
annually for a full check-up and assessment by a Dietitian, Foot
Care Technician, District Nurse and Doctor. Advice and support is
offered to diabetic patients and anybody who suspects they might
have symptoms of diabetes, at any time.
The Hypertension and Coronary Heart Disease Clinics offer an
annual check-up for all patients to ensure
that they are receiving the maximum benefit from their medication
and also to offer self help advice on maintaining health.
All new patients registering with the practice will be asked to attend
for a health screening assessment. This will be performed either by
one of the doctors or a Practice Nurse. We feel strongly that this is
an extremely valuable check-up as it can identify potential problems
and introduces you to the practice and to the services we can offer
you and your family.
You will be reminded when your cervical smear is due. Cervical
smear appointments are available with any of the Doctors and
Practice Nurses.
Any woman aged 40+ can be seen for advice and explanation of
menopausal problems. Self-help, dietary advice and medication are
discussed. We aim to improve quality of life and general health in
the future for this age group.
Contraceptive advice and contraceptives are provided by all the
Doctors and also by the Family Planning Nurses. Everyone
(including under 16 year olds) will be treated confidentially. All
contraceptive methods, including emergency contraception, are
provided free of charge.
Known as the 'morning after pill' emergency contraception is available at our surgery from either our doctors or family planning nurses. It can be effective if taken within 72 hours of having unprotected intercourse or a condom failure. The earlier it is taken the more effective it is likely to be.
If, however, you are unable to attend Mortimer Surgery, emergency contraception can be purchased from selected pharmacies within the area.
However, if more than 72 hours have elapsed, and you are within day 19 of your cycle, then please make an appointment with your doctor for further advice.
We can provide a comprehensive structured programme when wishing to give up smoking. This involves offering education and support from our Practice Nurses with the aid of Nicotine Replacement Therapy.
We can offer up-to-date and comprehensive information for all
travellers via a computer link to one of the largest tropical disease
hospitals in this country. We stock the complete range of
vaccinations and are a Yellow Fever centre.
We have information sheets for travellers with specific needs such as
diabetes, the elderly, those travelling with children or having a
fear of flying. A list of suggested equipment and emergency travel
kits is available from the nurse at the clinic. The contents of these
items will help keep you safe and in good health whilst you enjoy
your holiday.
